Town Vis is one of the oldest urban centers in Croatia. It was founded in 397. B.C. by Dionizije, the Greek ruler. Vis used to have colonies in area of Trogir, Stobrec and Lumbarda (Korcula). Town and island Vis opened their doors to tourists about 15 years ago. Inhabitants are mostly directed to agriculture.
In 4th century B.C. Greek settlers inhabitated island and founded town Issa which was strongest Adriatic state for 4 centuries. This is the reason why many battles were led for island Vis and it had many rulers such as Greeks, Romans, Italians, English, French, Austrians...
Town Vis keeps remains of Antique Issa. In 47th year B.C. Vis gets under Roman domination. Many buildings were built in that time. Vis was very strong and developed island. Today, more and more tourism has been developing.

Vis (Central Dalmatia, Croatia) is an island located in Croatian region Central Dalmatia. It is situated 45 km far from the mainland. It has area of 90 km2. Island Vis has very beautiful and rich nature, many bays, sandy and pebble beaches. Most known tourist destinations on island Vis are town Vis and Komiza. Island Vis has around 3500 inhabitants.
Climate on island Vis is Mediterranean with hot summers. It has over 2600 sunny hours per year. Average summer temperature is around 25 °C, and winter temperature is around 6 °C. Winds that blow are bora, mistral and scirocco.
Town Vis is situated on north-east side of island Vis. It is located in well protected bay. Town Vis has around 2000 inhabitants.
Komiza is situated on west side of island Vis. It is located in the bottom of hill Hum. Komiza has around 1500 inhabitants. Name Komiza was first time mentioned in 12th century. Komiza is known for fishing.
Island Vis has many cultural and historical monuments and buildings. The greatest are remains of antique Issa. On peninsula Prirovo you can see remains of antique theater and public swimming area. Around island Vis there are many sinked battle and trading ships. In Archeological Museum in Vis you can see collection of remains of amphoras, urns, vases, sculpture of a head of Greek goddess of hunt Artemida. You can visit Tito`s Cave and sea mine Lobster in a bay Parja which was an cache for battle boats and submarines.
Island Vis has many natural beauties also. You can visit island Bisevo and its Blue Cave with very small and shallow entrance. Sun rays acess through entrance between 11 am and noon and make beautiful blue light inside of a cave.
You should also visit bays Stoncica, Milna and Zaglav with sand beaches and bay Srebrna with pebble beaches.
